From the parking lot, you can expect about a half-mile hike on an asphalt trail to get to the falls. Waterfalls of Montana notes “the trail’s maximum grade is 11%, which is the most difficult classification for handicapped use.” The hike is through local spruce and fir trees and alongside volcanic cliffs that were created from prehistoric lava flow. Palisade Falls is at about a 7,200 feet elevation and falls about 80 feet over columnar basalt. If you want to extend your trip to Palisade Falls, pack a lunch to enjoy the picnic area.
